Enjoying the last of the blooms

Due to family priorities, our garden has been very unproductive in October. We’ve managed to keep our garden waste bin full and also cut the lawn, which has become extremely long. However, we’ve recently noticed that our honesty has taken root and will undoubtedly need tending.

There have still been a few bright days, but now that the clocks have been adjusted back by one hour, the nights are drawing in more and more. But hey, it means we will be welcoming more of our hearty winter meals.

What we’ve been up to in October

In the garden and on the website
Now that the weather is getting cooler, I’ve brought in our many money trees and lanterns, which were on the patio, and they are now safely ensconced in our conservatory.
A narrow stone path meanders through a lush tangle of ferns, ivy, and evergreen foliage in an English country garden. Dappled autumn light filters through the canopy, creating a tranquil, storybook atmosphere perfect for seasonal garden exploration.

I’ve cleared quite a few of our patio pots, as many of the summer plants have died. However, unbelievably, some are still producing flowers, especially a few fuchsias and some marigold-like plants.

However, once again, our nasturtiums are still flowering, and they’re amazing, although we know that once the first frost has arrived, they will die off. But we’re making the most of them while they’re here.

A vibrant orange nasturtium flower blooms against a backdrop of large, dew-kissed green leaves in the soft glow of autumn sunlight. This cheerful garden bloom captures the warmth and colour of an English country garden in October.

Additionally, we have a late-flowering dahlia with eye-catching red blooms, which brighten up a grey old day.

Achievements for October

Let’s keep ticking those boxes
Due to other priorities this month, we've only managed to tick a few jobs off the list for October. However, here are a few of our October tasks.

So, let’s see what we’ve managed to tick off for October.
Cut the lawn.

Clear some of the patio pots.

Top up the bird feeders.

Remove the last of our fresh chillies and freeze them.

Move the Money Trees into the conservatory.

Keep the garden waste bin as full as possible.

Lessons learnt & mistakes made

You live and learn
We need to tackle the honesty seedlings in our Cottage Garden bed before they take over.

Our plans for the coming month

What’s on your to-do list?
Rake up the fallen leaves.

Keep on top of the two front garden beds and prune the roses.

Cut the grass, it may be the final trim before the winter.

Monitor our softwood cuttings, I think it might be touch and go.

Weed the last of the driveway using a scraper.

Top up the bird feeders.

Clear the final patio pots.

Continue clearing weeds and unwanted planting in the Cottage Garden section.

Continue pruning larger shrubs.

Purchase a new shredder.

Please let us know what you have planned for your garden this month; we’d love to hear about it.
