The first signs of our winter bulbs

With December now coming to an end, most of our garden plants are entering their hibernation mode, although it is lovely to see that our Hellebores and Erysimum are fending off the winter frosts.

Even though the vibrant colours may have disappeared from our garden, with Christmas time upon us, our village has once again gone above and beyond the call of duty. So many houses and gardens have been illuminated for the festive period; the place looks delightful.

It is also a time when folk come together to arrange gift parcels for the older adults in the village and celebration packs for the children.

What we’ve been up to in December

In the garden and on the website
As you would expect, December has been a relatively quiet month in our garden. We’ve been tidying up the foliage and making sure that we have topped up our bird feeders. Our feathered friends are all extremely hungry, particularly the visiting woodpeckers.

First signs of new life for the New Year
This month, I was given an Amaryllis bulb to plant. I potted it up on Boxing Day, so I’ll keep you updated on its progress, fingers are crossed there’ll be signs of life soon.

Achievements for December

Let’s keep ticking those boxes
As I’ve mentioned previously in our monthly updates, our patio is reasonably protected from the harsh winter elements, so our patio pots and tubs continue to flourish for longer. When I popped out onto the patio the other day, I noticed that some of my winter flowering bulbs have started to sprout through the earth and are promising to provide another wonderful display.

The bulbs that I’m particularly looking forward to seeing are the delicate Dwarf Iris and our beautiful crocus, which we purchased from J Parker’s.

So, let’s see what we’ve managed to tick off for December.

Tidied up the garden beds.

Cleared the patio pots, now the plants have died back.

Ensuring we top up the bird feeders.

Collected more leaves.

Lessons learnt & mistakes made

You live and learn
One consolation for not being in the garden much in December is that I haven’t made any gardening mistakes. There’s always something positive to add.

Our plans for the coming month

What’s on your to-do list?
Prune more of the many shrubs in the back garden, check the pruning seasons.

Weed the driveway, again using a scraper.

Continue to monitor our garden tasks on the RHS Planner; this online tool is so handy.

Decided on the planting for our two front garden beds

Please let us know what you have planned in your garden this month; we’d love to know.
