Fresh new shoots on our winter bulbs
Yay, we’ve now scurried past the shortest day, and it’s just a matter of time before we see a glimpse of the later sunsets. I must admit I don’t mind the changing of the seasons, but it is nice to know the lighter evenings are to come.
With December now coming to an end, most of our garden plants are entering hibernation mode, though it is lovely to see that the Erysimums are fending off the winter frosts.
The vibrant colours may have disappeared from our garden; however, with Christmas time upon us, our village has once again gone above and beyond in exterior illumination. There are so many houses and gardens twinkling for the festive period.

What we’ve been up to in December
In the garden and on the websiteAs you would expect, December has been a relatively quiet month in our garden, especially with the build-up to Christmas. We’ve been tidying up the foliage and making sure that we have topped up our bird feeders. Our feathered friends are all extremely hungry, particularly the visiting woodpeckers, and we also have a pair of Robins that love hopping around the patio pots.

Last month, I mentioned that my Amaryllis had started sprouting; however, that appears to be its full extent. I have three strong leaves and no sign whatsoever of a flower shooting through. Oh well, there’s always next year.
Achievements for December
Let’s keep ticking those boxesWe've managed to tick a few jobs off the list for December; however, we would have liked to achieve more.
Frosty sundial
Move the standard roses and patio roses.
Sweep the patio of moss
Finished clearing the patio pots, now the plants have died back.
Top up the bird feeders.
Keep the garden waste bin as full as possible.
Lessons learnt & mistakes made
You live and learnOne consolation for not being in the garden much in December is that I haven’t made any gardening mistakes. There’s always something positive to add.

Keep an eye on the new winter bulb shoots
Weed the driveway using a scraper.
Continue clearing weeds and unwanted planting in the Cottage Garden section.
Prune more of the many shrubs in the back garden and check the pruning seasons.
Purchase a new shredder.
